T-Mobile MMS Settings for Unlocked iPhone 3G

I recently unlocked my iPhone 3G using the free blackra1n jailbreak and blacksn0w unlock in order to use it on T-Mobile’s service. After you do this, you will not be able to send or receive multimedia messages (MMS) without the correct MMSC and proxy settings. To enter these settings, go to Settings, then tap General > Network > Cellular Data Network, and scroll to the second (MMS) section.

APN: wap.voicestream.com
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050:8080
MMSC: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms

All other fields should be blank. If you have problems receiving messages, you might also want to enter:

Max Message Size: 1048576
MMS UA Prof URL: www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

Now reboot your phone and enjoy.

After contacting T-Mobile I was given an alternate set of instructions that also seems to work.

APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMS Proxy: (leave blank)
MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc

Hopefully this should resolve any issues that arise, although if you still have problems I suggest giving T-Mobile a call as the tier-3 tech who helped me out was very knowledgeable.

    Hi Brian -

With the information that you provided, are you able to receive MMS as well? My phone was unlocked using Cydia and I was able to send out MMS but not receive. All of a sudden today, I can’t send out any.

    Thanks -
    Laura

I can send and receive with these settings. If you’re having problems, I would try giving T-Mobile a call they are pretty knowledgeable about it.

  2. Kim says:

Are you able to talk on the phone and browse the web w/ your unlocked phone?

  3. beverly says:

i have been able to use the internet and text as much as i want, but i cant send pictures… is there a setting for that?

  4. Andra says:

i have the 4.0 version, unlocked 3G for Tmobile and I’m able to send, but not receive.. Any suggestions?

    • Brian says:

Honestly, I really don’t know. I don’t have any unlocked iDevices running 4.0. Your best bet is to ask on a forum dedicated to this type of thing…perhaps ModMyi has a good tutorial? Furthermore, if you upgraded from 3.x->4.0 you might try doing a fresh restore sans-baseband (as this usually fixes most problems cause due to firmware upgrades).

    • MR says:

It’s not a 4.0 issue as I experienced the same issue in 3.1.2. I just upgraded to 4.0 and im still experiencing the same issue. I can send mms but cannot receive. Each time I receive the following message: “The media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction”

I receive this message from any non iPhone users on all networks. Help….

      • Brian says:

Oh, this is a T-Mobile issue probably (not iPhone specific). Call them up and let them know you’re having this issue on an unlocked iPhone and they will help you. Also, did you set the “max message size” option (although I think this is for outgoing)?

      • Chrystian says:

I have the iphone 3g with version 4.1 and for some reason my cydia got erased, I can still send MMS messages but can not receive them. Do I have to have Cydia or another jail breaking app for this to work? Everything else works fine. HELP!

      • Brian says:

In order to be unlocked you should have at one point installed Cydia on your phone. I have no idea how you could have simply uninstalled it and still kept your iPhone working on T-Mobile…

  5. Karen says:

I am still not able to receive picture message. It’s telling about the size content

    • Brian says:

Did you set the Max Message Size field properly?

      • See that is what I thought, but I erased Cydia, or its some where that I can’t find even after searching the web for where it could be, I DL a crap load of things one day from Cydia and then went through an erased some and Cydia went with it??? But it still is unlocked and works perfect, I an be on the internet non wi fi and everything. I called T-mobile and she said I needed Cydia but they had other steps, which was entering all the MMC settings. I tried that and I can send myself pics, and others but even other iphones I get the “max message “

      • Brian says:

It sounds like you might have accidentally uninstalled a library that Cydia depends on. This shouldn’t effect MMS, although it can possibly break other things. I don’t know what causes the “max message size” error, and I don’t have an iPhone 3G on T-Mobile anymore so I can’t really figure it out on my own. I would try posting on an iPhone forum.

  6. Vikki says:

Thank you for your help on this! The second set of instructions did the trick.

“If you have problems receiving messages, you might also want to enter:

    Max Message Size: 1048576
    MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

Now reboot your phone and enjoy.”

Thanks again! I’ve been battling with this for hours, and now it seems to be working just fine. :)

  12. Kim says:

I did all this also…says just what you said to do, and as others I can send, but it still says the “The Media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction”

    • Brian says:

Have you tried calling T-Mobile and asking them to enable larger MMS sizes for your device?

      • Jarrid says:

T-mobile Tier 3 Tech Support says that thats not even an option to enable a larger MMS size. I have tried all settings you have posted and I can send MMS but not receive. I get the ” the media content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction” error message…. Suggestions??
